Wedding in Heidelberg During COVID

October 15, 2020

Time Capsule 2020 · This story captures Heidelberg during the pandemic

2020 changed many things. But not love. This wedding is proof of that.

When the pandemic arrived, many couples faced a difficult decision: postpone or celebrate anyway? This couple chose love — not the big party, but what truly matters. An intimate ceremony in the Registry office, with only the closest people present.

I accompanied several Covid weddings in 2020. Each one was special. Not despite the restrictions — but because they forced couples to focus on what truly matters. No entertainment programme, no pressure to keep a hundred guests happy. Just two people, a promise and a handful of witnesses.

What initially felt like a restriction became a gift. Without the pressure of a big celebration the couple could focus entirely on each other. The nervousness before the ceremony, the exchanged glances at the vows, the relief and joy afterwards — everything felt more intense, more focused, more honest.

And then: the old town almost to themselves. Where tourists normally stream through the lanes, on this day there was only us. The Old Bridge deserted, the Kornmarkt bathed in silence, the Schloss in the background like a private stage. Every place normally crowded belonged only to them.

As a photographer, it was a bizarre stroke of luck. The Old Bridge — normally impossible for couple photos without strangers in the frame — lay empty before us. No waiting, no "Could you please step aside?" We had all the time in the world. The afternoon light fell sideways on the sandstone towers, the Neckar shimmered quietly below. You normally only get shots like these at six in the morning.

These images tell a story bigger than the pandemic. They tell of courage, of love that cannot be stopped, and that the essence of a wedding was never the size of the celebration — but the depth of the moment.

Photographing in an empty city

As a photographer I have never experienced Heidelberg like this in 20 years. The main street without crowds, the Kornmarkt in silence, the Old Bridge as a private stage — these were conditions that will not repeat. Photographically it was a dream: no distracting elements, no waiting for gaps in the tourist flow. I could take wide-angle shots normally impossible, using the entire old town architecture as the frame for the couple.

My Fujifilm GFX worked in natural light that day — no flash, no reflectors. The afternoon light on the Neckar was soft and warm, perfect for portraits. The empty streets allowed me to step back and photograph the two from further away — something barely possible in a normal Heidelberg summer.

What I took away from the Covid weddings: The best wedding photos don't come from places where everything is perfectly planned. They come from where people are genuine. No script. No checklist. If you're planning an intimate wedding today — whether by choice or budget — know this: Fewer guests don't mean less emotion. Often it's the exact opposite.

For intimate ceremonies in Heidelberg I recommend the 3-hour package: Registry office, couple photos in the old town, maybe the Old Bridge at sunset. That's all it takes — and the images still tell a complete story.

What I learned from Corona weddings

During the pandemic I photographed some of the most moving weddings. Without the distraction of large celebrations the emotions were closer to the surface, the moments more intense, the images more honest.

The lasting lesson: You don't need fireworks for an unforgettable wedding. Sometimes two people, a promise and a good photographer who captures the moment are enough.

For small, intimate weddings I recommend my 3-hour package: ceremony plus couple photos, from €150. Perfect for civil ceremonies or elopements.

Whether small celebration or big wedding — I capture the moments that count. From €50/hour.
