Wedding Venue Heidelberg
Wedding photos at the Old Bridge
Bridge gate, Neckar, castle view — the Old Bridge combines everything that makes Heidelberg special in a single panorama. Here your wedding photos become postcard motifs with real emotions.
Why the Old Bridge?
The Karl-Theodor Bridge is Heidelberg's most photographed subject — and for good reason. It connects the gateway to the old town with the view of the castle and makes you feel as if you were in another time.
What most people don’t know: The Old Bridge has two completely different faces. In the morning, the light casts long shadows across the cobblestones and the Neckar lies still. In the evening, the sun turns the bridge towers into golden silhouettes. I prefer working here during the week, early or late — when the tourists have gone and the bridge belongs to you alone. The trick is the Neuenheim side: from there you photograph through the bridge arches toward the old town. Castle, towers, Neckar — all in a single image. No Photoshop needed. Heidelberg does it all by itself.
Historic bridge gate
The two towers of the bridge gate frame you stylishly — an unmistakable background for couple photos.
Panoramic view
From the bridge you have the castle, the old town, and the mountains in one image — nowhere else can you do this.
Atmospheric light
Sunrise and sunset on the water — the bridge offers special light for your photos at any time of day.

The best photo spots
🏛️ Bridge gate
The two towers of the medieval gate frame you like a painting. Particularly beautiful photographed from the old town side, with the bridge as a vanishing point.
🐒 Bridge monkey
The bronze monkey with the mirror is a good luck charm — and a fun stop for casual wedding photos. Complements the romantic images with a touch of humor.
🏰 Bridge center with castle view
From the center of the bridge, you have the perfect view of the castle above the rooftops of the old town. THE quintessential Heidelberg motif.
🌊 Neckar riverbank
The steps to the Neckar on the Neuenheim side offer an intimate waterside setting with the bridge in the background. Perfect for emotional couple photos.
Practical tips
📸 Best light
Early morning (before 9 AM), warm golden light falls on the bridge, ideal looking toward the castle. In the evening (1–2h before sunset), the low sun creates dramatic backlight over the Neckar.
👥 Avoiding tourists
The bridge is very busy during the day. For undisturbed photos, I recommend: weekdays before 8:30 AM, or from 7 PM in summer. In winter, it's generally quieter.
🚗 Getting there & parking
P12 parking garage (Kongresshaus) is the nearest parking. From there it's a 5-minute walk. Alternatively, park at Neuenheimer Feld and come from the north side.
💡 Insider tip
From the Philosopher's Walk on the other side of the Neckar, you have the ultimate panoramic view of bridge, old town, and castle. 10 minutes uphill — but it's worth it for breathtaking wide-angle shots!
FAQ
No — the Old Bridge is publicly accessible and photos are free. Only commercial film productions with equipment setup require a permit.
Civil ceremonies don't take place directly on the bridge. But many couples marry at the nearby Heidelberg registry office or the Church of the Holy Spirit and come to the bridge afterward for photos — a perfect sequence!
Rain actually creates particularly atmospheric images — the wet bridge beautifully reflects the light. The bridge gate offers some shelter. Plus, we can quickly switch to the nearby old town.
